HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf – Non Expandable, Moderate Level MFC

This new four function MFC from HP, the LaserJet Pro M1212nf, is small enough in both footprint and price to be considered for personal use, but is also networkable, and easily powerful enough to be considered for a small office. Its moderately high print resolution makes it a great device to consider for printing black and white imagery, but, unfortunately, copy resolution does not match the unit's print quality.

A resolution of only 600 x 400 dots per inch for copies makes the HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf not ideal for high resolution reproductions. Though best quality print mode runs, technically, only slightly higher, it has a 1200 dpi effective mode for great quality imagery. As usual, scan resolution runs much higher at a full 1200 x 1200 dots per inch for optical scanning, and an enhanced mode up to 19,200 dots per inch.

The HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf comes equipped with not only a flatbed top that is useful for copying and scanning three dimensional items such as books or magazines, it also carries an automatic document feeder that is useful when scanning multiple sheets of standard thickness paper, which can be an invaluable time saver for workloads requiring copies of large document sets. The ADF is even compatible with full, 8.5 x 14 inch letter sized paper.

A built in fax modem allows faxing at speeds of up to 33.6 Kbps, which translates to about 3 seconds per page for legal sized documents. A respectable fax resolution of 300 x 300 dots per inch is also helpful, along with a sizable laundry list of fax features including fax memory of up to 500 pages, auto fax reduction, auto redialing, fax delayed sending, and many, many more.

The HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf does not include a telephone handset for standard phone calls, but it does support PC interfacing, remote retrieval, fax polling, a telephone mode, and up to 100 stored speed dial numbers.

Connectivity comes in the forms of a high speed USB 2.0 port for single computer connectivity and a 10/100 Base T Ethernet network port for home or office networking. Of course, a standard RJ-11 telephone port is incorporated as well for fax support.

A two line, 16 character LCD display menu makes navigating through an incredible amount of fine tuning options easy, and fast. Copy control buttons and fax control buttons are separated for a less confused approach to stand alone navigation. Via the display menu and dedicated controls, users can take advantage of scan to e mail, scan to application, and scan to file features.

With the HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf's standard memory locked at 64 MBs, the device should suffer minimal slowdown under heavy conditions. Unfortunately, the MFC does not support memory expansion in any form. The unit comes with a built in 400 MHz Marvel processor, yet no option for an external duplexor, or additional paper trays. With very little expandability, but a very well balanced specification list, the HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf is a great option for the home office.
